Over time, pillows lose their shape and support, which can lead to neck pain, stiffness, or poor sleep quality. Even if your pillow still looks okay on the outside, the inside can collect dust mites, sweat, oils, and dead skin cells — not exactly what you want to rest your head on every night!
A good way to tell if it’s time for a new pillow is by how your head and neck feel when you wake up. If you find yourself fluffing it constantly or folding it in half for extra support, it’s likely no longer doing its job. Your pillow should support the natural curve of your neck and help keep your spine in alignment — no matter if you sleep on your back, side, or stomach.
Also, remember: your pillow should be under your head, not your shoulders. And the thickness (or loft) should match your sleeping position — thicker for side sleepers, medium for back sleepers, and flatter for stomach sleepers — to help maintain a neutral and comfortable head position throughout the night.
In short: if your pillow feels flat, lumpy, or leaves you waking up with aches, it’s probably time to treat yourself to a new one. Your neck will thank you.
